how will the prophecy come true? the answer is on the surface, but amos digs deeper, applying the insight and insight. he describes the destruction and decline of israel as a devoured and defiled land that has endured nearly three centuries of foreign rule without producing the fruit god has called for in the day that he established the nation. the following verse serves as a brief road map to the future, when israel’s „desolation” will be complete (habakkuk 2:16 -> revelation 3:3 -> revelation 20:15 –> haggai 2:6).
verses 3-8: the former prophets, hosea (hosea 2:9 –> hosea 3:4 –> hosea 4:6 –> hosea 8:5 –> hosea 12:12 ), amos (amos 8:6-8), and jonah (jonah 4:2-3), have walked the red-hot streets of judah, but their warnings did not produce the kind of outcome they predicted. amos’s words against judah refer to their apostasy from god and the homecoming of the day of the lord against them. many have perished because of their actions, but others have turned to god after being informed of his punishment. because of this, god will not punish judah: he will punish the inhabitants of the land (amos 1:2).
in verse 9, the prophet states that god’s nation will be restored, but the inhabitants of the land will become zealous for the law of jehovah that teaches submission to him alone, not to the gods of the peoples around them. god will bring them back to him and punish those who do not turn to him after their enemies’ failures. this prophecy clearly states that judah’s failures will not be the only ones to face judgment, but they will be the only ones to escape the day of the lord.
verses 10-13: god will use a man to chastise the nation again, but this man will do more than prophecy. he will walk in the spirit and cause spiritual transformation of judah’s community. instead of rejecting the holy spirit’s influence, they will readily confess their sins and turn from the god who judges those without repentance (cf. jeremiah 3:23). the man’s appearance will frighten some, but not all, who will ignore the report that he is going to reign (cf. daniel 8:11 –> daniel 9:24 –> revelation 10:7 -> revelation 19:11-15).
verses 14-18: the prophet depicts two successive short-term visions of a long-term future. under the first vision, judah, a virgin woman, will be pregnant, giving birth to a son who will rule over israel’s remnant. the nation’s wickedness will only create anger in the child, who will discipline the unrepentant nation to make them experience god’s judgment (cf. hosea 2:16 –> hosea 4:6 –> hosea 8:5 –> hosea 12:12 –> joel 3:16 –> joel 3:17 ). he will also judge israel’s enemies (cf. revelation 19:11-15).
most interpreters and historians agree that amos’s writings pre-date israel’s conquest of the northern kingdom in 722 bce. however, as usual, it’s not clear if he actually prophesied against the kingdom of israel, as his names and pedigree have been traced back to the time of jeroboam ii, an early king of israel.
the bible is full of lists of sins. first, god sends a flood to destroy the world, sparing only noah and his family. then, he destroys sodom and its people. he delights in sending disease to kill the philistines. he punishes the ammonites for harvesting more than their share of vineyards. he condemns moab for building its temple in the plains of moab, and all of israel for its apostasy.
