many of the film’s characters feel a little two-dimensional in the book. in the novel, sergeant howie is a more developed character, and the novel is much more character-driven than the film. in the film, howie is only there to serve as a way to explain where sergeant howie went, and his character is pretty much absent for the entire film. christopher lee has an interesting quality to his performance as lord summerisle. lee’s facial expressions are a little stiff and the character could be taken more seriously, but he puts in a good performance nonetheless.

the film starts with a man in a boat drifting across a lake to the island. he stops on a small island and discovers the body of a young girl buried in the ground. the corpse is wrapped in a wicker man, which would normally signal witchcraft, but the man is an english policeman named robin hardy (nicholas cage), who comes to investigate the disappearance of the young girl, willow (alexandra holden). hardy takes her with him to summerisle, the home of the pagan community. he learns that there are three women on the island that take charge of the community and that there is a warlike war going on between the men and the women. an odd coincidence occurs, and the girls are apparently unable to cope with this trauma because they don’t remember anything about willow. things just keep getting stranger and stranger, and there are many strange characters along the way, including the young lord summerisle, his friends, their father, the wicker man, and the head of the police force, lord summerisle. its all very strange, and it must be seen to be believed. but the ending is a bit too abrupt and cheap.

The Wicker Man (2006) – IMDb. One review said that it was „pretty scary, at least in parts”, and that „it is the genre stuff that is actually somewhat corny”. Another said the movie was „hilarious” and „fun.” The Wicker Man was released in the United States on August 27, 2006. The DVD was released.
