Photoshop is a tool that, along with other imaging software, enables you to do photo manipulation of the images that you import from your camera. Although it’s true that Photoshop can be used to create professional-looking photographs, most of us are not professional photographers. The common need for us is to get our children’s faces on a birthday cake, or our golf trophies on the wall.
As I discuss in this chapter, many cameras produce files that have a resolution of 6 megapixels (6,000,000 pixels) and beyond. Laptops, tablets, and other mobile devices also produce images that rival the quality of some of today’s compact cameras. Although you can import such files and adjust them with Photoshop, the amount of tweaking required makes doing so a chore.
So what’s a photographer to do when he or she wants to have the same final look as a professional photographer? The answer is to use a specific program such as Photoshop, Lightroom, or Camera Raw. Once you import your image into the program, you can make changes to the image — changing the color of someone’s eyes or closing them, for example — so that when you share the image, it looks just as good as what a pro would do.
As a shortcut, you can use the web interface that’s built into Lightroom and Photoshop to browse and manipulate images online. To access the web interface, select File⇒Web, or press +W. Photoshop Elements is simpler to use than Photoshop. Elements is designed for the beginning user and makes all of the complicated features that present a challenge for beginners much easier to use.
Use Elements to combine multiple layers and adjust the opacity of each layer. Keep in mind the layers act on top of each other. Use the bottom layer to change the opacity of the first, then top layer and finally the bottom layer.
Elements adds multiple tools for cropping, selection, object removal and add-ons. You can crop a photo by cropping to the rectangular area above and below the image. You can also crop a photo using circle, square, or polygon areas. You can create a selection in a photo to remove unwanted areas. Elements also makes it easier to remove and replace an object using the Object Removal or Clone Stamp tools.
Elements also allows you to duplicate and flatten the layers of your image. You can keep parts of your photo hidden by flattening its layers and then combine its layers together. You can use the Layers panel to combine multiple layers. Photoshop Elements allows you to combine layers in the following order: from the bottom up and then down and then up.
Easy to learn
The interface of Elements is simpler to use than that of Photoshop. Photoshop Elements doesn’t have the same set of toolbars as Photoshop. To use the elements you first have to open them. You do this by clicking the Open button in the top bar and then the folder containing your new image. Then click on the one of the various panels you want to edit the image in.
This interface can be slightly confusing for experienced Photoshop users but Elements has a much shorter learning curve than that of Photoshop. It’s important to also note that Elements offers automatic layer masks. A layer mask allows you to keep certain areas of the layer you want to preserve while removing the areas that don’t belong in the photograph.
Use the main tool palette to make adjustments to your image and then use the menu bar to control what happens to the selected image. The menu bar also lets you save your adjustments or undo them.

The Eraser tool allows you to delete areas of an image, either automatically or by correcting any mistakes manually.
The Magic Wand tool can be used to find any parts of the image.
You can also use the Quick Selection tool to quickly select an object or any part of an image.
The Adjustment, Curves, Gradient and Levels tools are used to adjust the tone and color of an image. You can manually change the levels, saturate or desaturate the image, and make it more transparent or opaque.
The Heal tool is used to correct any errors in an image.
You can use the Clone tool to copy part of an image and paste it into another part of the same image.
You can use the Color Range feature to assign colors to the objects or areas in an image.

On any one day, over fifty percent of The New York Times is about „the war on terrorism.” It might be the war on smoking, or the war on motherhood or even the war on happiness. But the biggest story is the war on terrorism. The same phenomenon occurs in other major newspapers.
