Introduction

AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

When compared to other commercial CAD products, AutoCAD is noted for its ease of use. Most users of other CAD products are very familiar with keyboard entry and editing. AutoCAD is quite different. It is not a graphing program, but a command line based drafting and design application that operates on a microprocessor. It was originally written in assembly language for the minicomputer market, and then recompiled in C for the PC platform. The many graphical features are achieved with a powerful, easy-to-use drawing and editing environment.

AutoCAD’s graphics capabilities can be further enhanced through plugins that are sold by third parties. The most popular plugins are those for 3D modeling, engineering, printing, animation and web. The best known of these is the AutoCAD Web Application, an award-winning interactive web-based, PC-to-web application. The Web Application creates a fully interactive web site with built-in support for AutoCAD’s powerful 2D, 3D and web features.

AutoCAD is designed to be a full-featured CAD application. Unlike older, text-based CAD programs, AutoCAD’s users are no longer necessarily engineers. User interface design and features are geared toward professional drafting and architectural design. While it is still possible to create complex technical drawings and projects using AutoCAD, it is designed to be a simpler, more intuitive design tool for architects, engineers and artists.

History

In 1982, CAD was only available for engineers and architects. Typically, engineers would use tools such as Bauhaus or Igor, or the less known, but arguably more powerful, Stratego, to create computer drawings. CAD software was available for desktop microcomputers, and was mainly used for CAD drafting. This did not change until the late 1980s, when personal computers began to be installed in the work place.
