SubRip is more than just a single file. The main file is the SRT file, which is an XML file containing the video and its associated HTML (which says something like ‘In 0:0:20’ if the video is 20 seconds in length). Using this information, the SRT file is then processed in a number of ways:
- When a video file is added to a normal video player, it will give a simple icon indicating that the video includes subtitles. Not all such software will display subtitles in this way, or provide any sort of translation of subtitles, but this is how this problem is normally addressed.
- Some software may display the video normally but tell the user there are no subtitles (which is normally not the case) – if the video includes a SRT file they may be told to download it.
- Some software may display the video normally but make the audio and subtitles sound like they are from a different file or a section of the video than the rest of the file. This is called asynchronisation.
Take the time to download the subtitles for the video, open them up in a text editor (or just turn them into text with a word processing software) and place them at the beginning of the same filename in the same folder as the video (ie video.mp4 – subtitles.txt).
Now, the video will have a SubRip subtitle, and you can use it to transcode the subtitles, if you want to. Normally, you wont want to, since that will mess with the quality of the file. You do, however, want to transcode the video into a format that Youtube can read.
To view the video, go to the search function on Youtube, enter the video, and click on the play button to go to the video page. You’ll see a video icon that says ‘Subtitle File:’. Click this, and it will open a download window.
